Fishing Info

Most of our Skeena River Steelhead Tours originate in the town of Terrace, BC. There is a modern airport in Terrace and central accommodations that allow for easy access to a variety of rivers. In Terrace you’ll fish with guide Todd Scharf and his crew of highly regarded steelhead guides. This is a great team who takes outstanding care of Chromer clients and we’re lucky to have them on board as a part of this trip.

Skeena River:  The main drainage of northern BC, the Skeena is the main artery for summer-run steelhead migrating inland to the Kispiox, Bulkley and Babine rivers among hundreds of other small streams.  Long sweeping runs hold plus size steelhead that will put you deep into the backing.

Kalum River:  The Kalum River is a major tributary of the Skeena and an absolute pleasure to fish.  This is a river known for producing some of the largest steelhead in British Columbia. Fed from Kalum Lake, the Kalum River has long slow moving runs and varied structure suiting it perfectly to the swung-fly angler.

Exploring the Skeena Region

It is about a 2 hour drive from Terrace to Smithers. Along the way we’ll stop, taking in the local site, including ancient totems of the Kispiox Valley and Hagwilget Bridge in Hazelton. Unless you’re a local these are sites few visitors get to see, a wonderful feature of this particular trip.

Smithers is a steel header’s mecca. Home to the world famous Bulkley River, the area around Smithers is stunning in the Fall, as the hillsides glow in orange and yellow. The steelhead fishing here is among some of the best in the world.

Bulkley River:  Spectacular steelhead fishing is what the Bulkley is know for. An easily waded beautiful river with approximately 20,000 returning wild steelhead annually. This is a dream fishery that is one of ours, and our clients, favourites.

Morice River:  The Morice is the main tributary of the Bulkley and offers some spectacular fishing during the late summer and fall months. The Morice offers easy wading, short casting distances and high numbers of congregating fish.

Tours originate in Terrce, BC, located a 1.5 hour flight north of Vancouver. There are multiple flights daily, we’ll give you suggested flights upon booking. Spend the first leg of the tour exploring the Skeena and Kalum rivers along with other smaller tributaries. The second portion of the trip takes place in Smithers, BC, this is where you’ll fish the Bulkley and Morice rivers.

Who do we fish with?

You’ll be fishing with our crew of fully licensed guides in Terrace and Smithers. We have secured exclusive days with them to make sure you’re fishing with the top steelhead guides in northern BC.

Are the tours private?

Yes. The tours are private for you and your group. Optimal group sizes is 2-4 anglers. We do not offer this trip to any larger groups.

What is the advantages / disadvantages of this tour over a regular lodge package?

Advantages include fishing a variety of rivers. Most lodge packages only have access to one or two rivers, while on this tour you can fish multiple rivers over the days you are here. One special advantage of the tour is that you really will experience northern BC, you’ll see some spectacular areas, drive through local communities and get a true feel for the area and the different fisheries. There are few disadvantages, but over the years we’ve had clients ask for better accommodation options, which we strive for and have certainly met with our new cabin accommodations in Terrace.

Why is this trip priced the way it is?

Single days of fishing on the classified rivers of northern BC is always more expensive than a lodge package. We’ve done our best to keep the price down by bundling days on different rivers. The tour is priced comparably to most lodge packages.
