Fishing Info

Vancouver Island is home to plenty of rivers that maintain wild steelhead runs, but none are as famous as the Gold River.  The Gold River empties into Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island’s central west coast.  It is a wild river, void of dams or hatchery steelhead.

Winter steelhead fishing on Vancouver Island and on the Gold River doesn’t come without challenges though.  The weather is often cool and wet and sometimes inconsistent water levels force fish to move around.  The rewards for anglers up to the challenge are spectacular though.  Gold River steelhead pull hard and are true ‘chromers’, wild and bright ranging from 5 to 25 pounds!

Chromer Sport Fishing makes planning a Gold River fishing trip seamless. When you book your trip with us we’ll get you hooked up with our licensed guide Curtis Smith and make sure you get some prime fishing dates.

If you’d like to fish one of British Columbia’s most famous winter-run steelhead rivers with its top guide or if you have any questions please contact us.

Traveling to Vancouver Island, where the Gold River is located, is easy, but will take some planning because it involves catching a ferry from Vancouver over to Vancouver Island and then about a two hour drive to the town of Campbell River. Campbell River, about an hour from the Gold is where we suggest our guests stay.

When is the best time for steelheading on the Gold River?

That is probably the hardest question to answer. The only consistency to Winter steelhead fishing in British Columbia is that there is none. Fish move with the ever changing river conditions and can be finicky from day to day. Generally January and February are consistent on the Gold, but always good to check with us before committing to particular dates.

We are flying in to Campbell River, can you pick us up at the airport?

With enough notice we can arrange for our guide to get you. There is a  $150 flat fee for an airport pickup.

What about fishing licenses?

Upon booking we’ll send you a link to purchase your British Columbia freshwater fishing license and steelhead conservation stamp. You can easily buy one online and just make sure you bring it for your day of fishing.

Is this a fly-fishing or a gear fishing trip?

Up to you, we can accommodate fly anglers and conventional gear anglers on Gold trips.

I’ve done little steelhead fishing, is the Gold a good trip for me?

Probably not. This is technical fishing that is more suited to experienced anglers looking for a new challenge.
