Fishing Info | The Rich Waters of Haida Gwaii

Consistency is what fishing on the west coast of Haida Gwaii is all about. This area offers excellent fishing right from early season to when it all wraps up. This has become our top selling saltwater salmon fishing  package for us  six years running because of this fact combined with top shelf guiding, boats and accommodation. For the price there really isn’t anything that can beat this trip in terms of fishing quality, both for salmon and halibut, Haida Gwaii West is as good as it gets!

Beginning in May every year, large schools of chinook (king) salmon feed heavily as they move through the waters of Cartwright Sound on the west coast of Haida Gwaii. Great fishing for chinook in the 18 to 40 pound class can be had throughout the length of the season from May through September each year. This is one of the longest season for chinook salmon fishing on the coast. There is a fair share of really big fish as well, every season decent numbers of 40 to 50 pound chinooks are landed and in recent years the “west side” has put up some impressive numbers of quantity and size, boasting several fish in the 60 to 70 pound range. Good numbers of Coho start showing up in early July and remain for the season but it is the great & consistent chinook fishing that is the highlight of the Sandspit/Cartwright Sound area.

There is nothing worse than finding out the boat you are spending the next several days on is inadequate and uncomfortable. The lodge’s two 30 foot Kingfisher’s are the ultimate guide boats and guests completely agree. The boats have been custom designed to accommodate 4 guests plus a guide, with room to spare. The massive fishing decks are outfitted with 4 Scotty electric downriggers, rear steering station with electronics and a bimini top. The spacious interior is equipped lots of seating, fully enclosed stand up bathroom, forced air heat, stereo system and a bed in the bow for that optional mid afternoon nap.

Head guide and owner Neil Goodwin has been a long-time friend of Chromer Sport Fishing and we’re pleased to have him on board. Neil has spent the past 18 years guiding the north coast of British Columbia and Haida Gwaii and is one of the most knowledgable and likeable salmon guides you’d ever want to spend time fishing with. Covered 26-30 foot boats loaded with top of the line electronics, heated cabins and onboard bathrooms make for comfortable fishing in unpredictable west coast conditions. Spacious fishing decks allow up to four anglers per boat with lots of room to spare. Chromer only represents the best fishing trips in BC and this operation fits that bill in every way.

Fishing British Columbia's Haida Gwaii

“Hi there Yos, thanks for setting us up with an absolutely excellent trip! Neil was a great guide, when fishing got slow he knew where to go to find the fish we even had a triple header that got a little crazy and a lot of fun. The lodge was great and food awesome. You know your old when you leave booze behind because your tired from fishing! If we get a chance to go out there again it would be with you guys!”

fishing haida gwaii review

“This was my first trip with Avid Sportfishing and it was spectacular! The trip planning was well done with all details handled superbly by Chromer Sport Fishing. Tara and Timo handled the meals and lodging in a very friendly and accomplished manner. Our guide, Jody, was not only extremely knowledgeable but also entertaining, regaling us with many stories of the area and his personal experiences. The fishing was better than anything that I have ever experienced. My brother and I left with a catch of spring salmon, red snapper, ling cod, rockfish, and halibut. The filleting, freezing and packaging of our large catch was very professionally done. Neil and Kristi are very hardworking, dedicated and engaging. They go out of their way to provide the very best for their guests”
