Fishing Info

Beginning in May every year, large schools of chinook (king) salmon feed heavily as they move through the waters of Cartwright Sound on the west coast of Haida Gwaii. Great fishing for chinook in the 18 to 40 pound class can be had throughout the length of the season from May through September each year. This is one of the longest season for chinook salmon fishing on the coast. There is a fair share of really big fish as well, every season decent numbers of 40 to 50 pound chinooks are landed and in recent years the “west side” has put up some impressive numbers of quantity and size, boasting several fish in the 60 to 70 pound range. Good numbers of Coho start showing up in early July and remain for the season but it is the great & consistent chinook fishing that is the highlight of the Sandspit/Cartwright Sound area.

Head guide and owner Neil Goodwin has been a long-time friend of Chromer Sport Fishing and we’re pleased to have him on board. Neil has spent the past 18 years guiding the north coast of British Columbia and Haida Gwaii and is one of the most knowledgable and likeable salmon guides you’d ever want to spend time fishing with. Covered 26-30 foot boats loaded with top of the line electronics, heated cabins and onboard bathrooms make for comfortable fishing in unpredictable west coast conditions. Spacious fishing decks allow up to four anglers per boat with lots of room to spare. Chromer only represents the best fishing trips in BC and this operation fits that bill in every way.

Haida Gwaii
FAQ's

How do we get to the west coast of Haida Gwaii?

Flying from Vancouver takes about 1.5 hours. This return flight is included in the price of the package. Upon arriving in the small town of Sandspit, you’ll be greeted by lodge staff at the airport and shuttle to the lodge.

What happens to the fish we catch?

Fish are professionally cleaned, vacuum packed, flash-frozen and boxed for transport. For smoking and additional processing services fish can be sent directly to St. Jeans Cannery.

How do we get beers and alcohol as they aren’t included in the trip price?

Upon arrival in Sandspit, you can swing by the liquor store & stock up for your trip. This can be a huge savings for larger groups as you won’t be paying marked up liquor prices like you would at some lodges.

Can you accommodate larger groups?

We can accommodate groups of up to 12 people but normally the lodge only accommodates 8 people at a time.

Those boats look awesome, what exactly are they?

There is nothing worse than finding out the boat you are spending the next several days on is inadequate and uncomfortable. The lodge’s two 30 foot Kingfisher’s are the ultimate guide boats and guests completely agree. The boats have been custom designed to accommodate 4 guests plus a guide, with room to spare. The massive fishing decks are outfitted with 4 Scotty electric downriggers, rear steering station with electronics and a bimini top. The spacious interior is equipped lots of seating, fully enclosed stand up bathroom, forced air heat, stereo system and a bed in the bow for that optional mid afternoon nap.
