“Just finished fishing for chum and silver salmon with Paul and Yos on the Squamish River for the past four days. Both are excellent guides who I’d 100% recommend fishing with if you are visiting British Columbia.”

Chris P – Orlando, Florida

“Yos and his team of guides treated us like gold. We had two epic days on the river, and caught a ton of fish. The Chromer team runs a first class outfit with super experienced and knowledgeable guides, and excellent communication every step of the way; from booking, leading up to the event, and during. I can honestly say it was the most positive fishing experience in my life, and our entire group of newbies are hooked for life on spey casting!”

ANDREW H – VANCOUVER, BC

FAQ’S ABOUT OUR FALL SALMON TRIPS

ANSWERS TO YOUR FISHING QUESTIONS

Because we want you to have the best time river fishing with us, here are some quick answers to our most common Fall fishing questions!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO RIVER FISHING?

We enjoy a relatively long season of Fall salmon fishing on BC rivers, with solid fishing from late September to late November. For the absolute most prime window for fishing you'll want to be here from mid October to mid November.

CAN WE KEEP SALMON?

Our guiding operation does not offer keeping of salmon. We are a conservation minded company and offer strictly catch and release fishing.

CAN I BRING MY OWN FLY FISHING GEAR?

Of course you can. If you don't have fly fishing gear we offer full gear rental (waders/boots/rods/reel) for $39 CAD.

WHERE ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS?

We put our clients up in two hotels in Squamish. The Howe Sound Inn and the Executive Suites. Both have onsite dining and are great places to stay.

WHERE DO THESE TRIPS TAKE PLACE?

Our Fall fishing program is on the Squamish River. This system is made up of the main stem Squamish and four major tributaries. It is an amazing fishery, only 45 minutes north of Vancouver, yet offering a true wilderness experience.

IS THIS FLY FISHING ONLY?

The majority of what we do is fly fishing. That said we welcome all anglers and can accommodate conventional gear fisherman as well.

DO YOU OFFER TRANSPORTATION?

Yes. We'll pick you up in Vancouver. You can also opt to meet us in Squamish to maximize your fishing time, that's what most people do.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD WE BOOK?

October and November are two very busy months for us. It's not a bad idea to plan your trip in advance, so we can accommodate your preferred dates.

SQUAMISH RIVER DAY TRIPS

GUIDED FLY FISHING FOR SALMON

Our guided fly fishing day trips to the Squamish River are offered year-round but if you’re interested in targeting chum and coho salmon you’ll want to aim for an October or November timeframe. Squamish is located about an hour north of Vancouver and is home to wild rivers that have healthy salmon returns in the Fall months. Our guided trips include transportation from Vancouver, or you can opt to meet us in Squamish to maximize your day of fishing. If you have a vehicle that is what most people opt for and we send a detailed driving map.
The fishing we do is mainly focused on the sections of river closest to the ocean, targeting clean chrome fish as they come off the saltwater. This is the best area for fresh chum and coho salmon. The area is home to hundreds of eagles in the Fall months and it’s not uncommon to see elk and black bears. We offer a variety of guided experiences, from half-day trips, to full-day trips to our popular river drifts. Our professional Squamish fishing guides will make sure you have a fun and safe day on the water.
Chum salmon range from 8-20 pounds. They’re a great fighting fish and the Squamish River is home to a healthy return of chum salmon each Fall. Coho salmon, also known as silver salmon, are in the 5-12 pound range. These are aerobatic fish that crush flies. Have a look at the full feature done on our company with Fishing BC & The Fly Fishing Journal, it will give you a good idea of what to expect!

OTHER FALL FISHING IDEAS

STEELHEAD TRIPS IN THE NORTH

Our Squamish Fall salmon fishing day trips and packages are a favourite trip for October and November but there are some other good BC fishing options you can look at for the Fall months. You can find some cool options near Vancouver or venture a little further.
October is generally the best month for BC steelhead fishing in northern British Columbia. Steelhead fishing is offered on the Skeena River system and its tributaries including the Bulkley River and the Babine River. These are serious trips for serious anglers and generally take some preplanning to get prime dates and organize travel. Steelhead fishing trips aren’t as budget friendly as what we offer on the Squamish River. BC steelhead fishing packages are generally weeklong affairs that range in the $4500-$7500 USD price range per person.
If you’re looking for another BC fishing experience in the Fall, then October and November area also prime months for sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River. These trips take place east of Vancouver, from Squamish it is about a 2 hour drive. Very often we will have clients who come salmon fishing with us and then included a day or two of sturgeon fishing as well.

SOME FALL FISHING TIPS!

IF YOU’RE HEADED OUT ON YOUR OWN

Having a guide is nice but if you’re headed out salmon fishing on your own we wanted to give you a few tips. These are simply tips we use when guiding and will hopefully help you catch a few more fish…
Don’t wade deep. This is the most common mistake, as most salmon are often close to shore in 2-3 feet of water.
Be patient. Salmon come through in waves, especially if you’re fishing close to the ocean. Rolling fish are an indicator that salmon are moving through.
Downsize your fly. It’s a common mistake to use big heavy flies for salmon. Most of the fish we catch are on small, sparsely tied flies that have a light amount of weight to them! Here’s the Hobo Spey Fly, a Fall salmon and steelhead favourite.
Be respectful of these fish. Never drag salmon onto sand or rocks and ensure all fish are kept in the water. If you’re taking a photo do it quickly and ensure the fish is revived before releasing.
Read the BC freshwater fishing synopsis before heading out, use only single barbless hooks and ensure you have you BC fishing license with you at all times!
