The best time to come steelhead fishing with us is anytime from early March to early May.
We have a variety of rivers to fish, the Squamish River is built for swung fly fishing, with long expansive runs and beautiful hold water for fish. In the early season our fishing focus is on the lower Squamish River, fishing sections only a few kilometres from open ocean. Fish are chrome bright, often with sea lice on them and they crush flies. As we move later in our Spring season our focus is on fly fishing for steelhead on the upper Squamish River, a rugged wilderness valley where we’ve called home for the past 20+ years. This is wild country, we often see mountain goats on the high cliffs, elk in the valley and even grizzly bears roaming the back channels.

Squamish Fishing GUIDE

TIPS & TRICKS

FROM OUR SQUAMISH FISHING GUIDES

Figuring out how to catch fish in Squamish isn’t the easiest thing to do. It’s a big river system that changes drastically through each season. If you’re just getting into fish we do offer fly fishing courses and spey casting lessons in Squamish.

WHERE TO GO?

When talking about the Squamish River there is the ‘upper’ and the ‘lower’ river. The lower is easily accessed via the Mamquam Bar, Fishermans Park and the Cheakamus River. The upper river is a bit harder to figure out and where we run much of our Squamish guide services.

SQUAMISH FLIES

Finding a fly to catch fish isn’t easy. Here are our two favourite Squamish fishing flies, the super effective Mister March and the Hobo Spey, which is a great trout, steelhead and salmon fly.

Fishing Licenses

If you’re fishing around Squamish you’ll need a BC freshwater fishing license. Plan on targeting steelhead? Then you’ll need a steelhead conservation license. All wild steelhead must be released on the Squamish and single barbless hooks must be used.

FAQ’S ABOUT OUR SQUAMISH TRIPS

ANSWERS TO YOUR FISHING QUESTIONS

You want to plan your Squamish steelhead trip with confidence. That’s why we’re here, our team of BC steelhead fishing experts are here to answer your questions. Here are some of the most common questions about this trip…

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO FISHING IN SQUAMISH?

If you're wanting to target steelhead you'll want to plan your trip for either March or April. Early May can be very good as well, as long as we don't get hot temperatures that melt a ton of snow and bring water levels up. May and June are when we have our highest river levels and fishing can be tough. August and September are great for Pink Salmon fishing on odd years and October & November are the best months for chum and coho salmon.

DO WE NEED ANY GEAR OR EXPERIENCE?

Nope! We offer gear rental for $39 CAD, that includes waders, boot and all fly fishing tackle. If you have no previous fishing experience this is a great place to start. Our pro team of Squamish valley fishing guides will teach you all about fishing in the area and make sure you have a safe day.

HOW MANY STEELHEAD ARE IN THE SQUAMISH SYSTEM?

Nobody really knows the answer to that, but estimated run sizes are around 1000 fish, so pretty small. We'll put you in all the right places, the fish just have to be home! Like we said before, this is a quality fishery, not a quantity fishery. If you're looking for numbers then this isn't the trip for you.
