November is a transition month for fishing around BC, as temperatures cool and winter encroaches. The best opportunities you’ll find this time of year are generally on the southern coast of BC, targeting migrating salmon and trout on coastal rivers. There’s also some good sturgeon fishing to be had. Most of BC’s steelhead fishing operations are wrapping up for the season by early November. November offers very limited saltwater salmon fishing opportunities, with most charter companies winding down in mid October. Here’s a rundown of the October fishing opportunities you’ll find in BC…
WINTER FISHING CLOSE TO VANCOUVER
From Vancouver we offer two trips in December; our guided fly fishing trips and our guided Vancouver salmon fishing charters. December fly fishing is focused on the Squamish River north of Vancouver, where we have a healthy population of Bull Trout we can fish for in December. There are also some rainbow trout. Our guided Vancouver fly fishing trips are offered year round and include transportation from Vancouver. December fly fishing consists of fishing egg and flesh patterns, to mimic the remnants of the Falls salmon runs. As for saltwater salmon fishing in Vancouver we are running charters all winter long. This is a fun time of year for a trip, we can drop crab and prawn traps and generally have consistent fishing for Winter Chinook salmon all through December and January.
STEELHEAD FISHING IN DECEMBER
If you’re looking for a winter steelhead fishing trip in BC, you’ll want to venture to the steelhead rivers of Vancouver Island, as they get their first push of steelhead starting in early December. Keep in mind this is a very fickle fishery, timing is everything and you need the right weather and river conditions for success. There is also some steelhead fishing on the islands of Haida Gwaii, off of BC’s northern coast. This is a trip for serious anglers looking for a unique BC fishing adventure. Remember, you’ll want to manage expectations when it comes to Winter steelhead fishing. It is not for first time anglers and if you’re itching for a steelhead trip, you’ll want to look at some Spring months for a greater chance at success.
