Fraser River Sturgeon Fishing FAQ’s

If you’re planning BC sturgeon fishing trip here are a few FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) that we get when people are inquiring about a trip on the Fraser River. We want to make sure you have the best possible sturgeon fishing trip here in British Columbia and will always go the extra mile so that happens! You can have a look at out BC Sturgeon Fishing page for more info on what we offer, but for now, here are a few answers to common questions about fishing on the Fraser River.

When is the best time for a BC sturgeon fishing trip?

The best time for a BC sturgeon fishing trip is anywhere from early March to late November. Spring months offer good fishing on the lower Fraser River, near Chilliwack, BC. Summer months, of July, August & September are primetime and will put you into the most consistent sturgeon fishing. During the Fall is when we see many of our biggest fish, with October & November, being famous for monster sturgeon at our Remote Canyon location.

Where are your sturgeon fishing trips?

We fish from downstream of Chilliwack to upstream of Yale, a massive expanse of river that is home to the best sturgeon fishing found anywhere in the world!  The Fraser is the biggest river in British Columbia and drains a huge area, pretty much everything south of the Rocky Mountains. The Fraser enters the ocean right at Vancouver, if you’re flying in the Vancouver International Airport actually is located on the Fraser River delta. The trip closest to Vancouver is in Chilliwack, that’s about 90 minutes east of Vancouver. The other BC sturgeon trips is we offer are the more remote trips, those leave from either Agassiz, BC or Hope, BC, just a bit further of a drive, but well worth it!

How do we get to the Fraser River?

The areas we depart from on the Fraser River are anywhere between 1-1.5 hours driving time from downtown Vancouver. The best option is to drive yourself. Driving yourself is easy, we’ll send you a detailed map to our meet locations when booking. If you’re visiting Vancouver you can rent a car on arrival at the airport or, if you just want to go sturgeon fishing for the day, then you can rent a car in downtown Vancouver. Avis Car Rentals is close to all the downtown Vancouver hotels.

A good sized white sturgeon takes a leap behind the boat on the Fraser River. This is a mecca for sturgeon fishing and we’ll put you in all the best locations of the Fraser, maximizing your days of fishing!

Is there a time that’s not good for sturgeon fishing?

In mid May to mid June we can see some of the highest water of the year on the Fraser River. Fishing can still be good, but the high water tends to give us limited places to fish. Often if we have clients looking for a trip during that time, our Chilliwack location is the best option. If the river is simply too high for a good day of fishing, then we suggest looking at our Vancouver salmon fishing charters, they’re a great Vancouver fishing option during the month of May.

If you want to fish out of Chilliwack BC then there are multiple hotel options, we usually use the Coast Hotel Chilliwack, it is centrally located and has onsite dining. Our Remote Canyon location has less accommodation options, but we will let you know what is available at time of booking.  We can book you accommodations or you can book directly, whatever suits you, not a problem.

Many of our clients come from overseas, specifically the UK, Scandinavia and Italy. If you are coming from those or anywhere else, we can arrange transportation services from the Vancouver airport, so you can come and have a seamless vacation with us.
