Vancouver Fly Fishing Report October 2020

We’ve been enjoying some great weather and fishing this October in and around Vancouver. Our Fall fly fishing program has been in full swing and we’ve had some solid fishing on the Squamish River for coho salmon. More on that below. Thanks for reading our latest Vancouver fishing report and if you’re looking for other options you can visit our page with October fishing trips in BC. For now here’s our October fishing report and our latest fishing guide VLOG to kick it off…

VANCOUVER FLY FISHING REPORT

What can we say, we love this time of year! Our Fall BC fly fishing program is off to a great start, river conditions have been really good (with the exception of one blowout) and there’s a healthy number of coho salmon coming into the Squamish River system.

October and November are the two prime months for freshwater river fishing for salmon in BC and our home waters welcome a run of coho and chum salmon at this time each year. In the past few years salmon returns have been later and later, but this year the first solid push of coho came into the river in early October.

The majority of the fishing we’ve been doing has been on the Squamish River, but there has been some good fishing on the Cheakamus and Mamquam rivers as well. Chum fishing is currently closed, so we’ve been focused on fishing for Squamish River coho salmon.

There’s been some good bull trout fishing as well, the Squamish River bull trout getting pushed around a bit by the salmon, but fishing some streamer patterns has produced some solid bull trout fishing days. With solid numbers of coho salmon in the river that has been our main focus, but as salmon fishing slows off in mid/late November we’ll move back to bull trout fishing.

As we move into the last 10 days of October and early November it looks as if temperatures will cool and we’ll only be getting better river conditions. We’ve had great river conditions all week, that milky green colour with a few feet of visibility. As temperatures cool and the freezing level goes up the river clarity will only improve.

We’ve booked up a lot of days in October and November for our fly fishing trips in Squamish, but still have openings. If you’re interested in a guided BC fly fishing trip this Fall have a look at our BC Fall Salmon Fishing page for more info and pricing.
